This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential principles, regulations, and standards that underpin compliant lighting design. Covering both fundamental concepts and practical applications, it equips learners with the knowledge to design lighting solutions that meet industry good practice and legal requirements. 

 

Learners will build a foundational yet comprehensive understanding of how lighting design interacts with workplace functionality, user wellbeing, regulatory compliance, and environmental responsibility. Through ten focused modules, the programme explores everything from light distributions and design intent to fit-out classifications, fire safety testing, and the detailed application of UK and European lighting standards.

With real-world case studies, visual exercises, and technical explanations, this course equips learners with the essential knowledge and reasoning skills to make informed, effective, and compliant lighting design decisions across interior and exterior environments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will:

  • Explain the fundamental principles of lighting design, and how they apply to different indoor and outdoor environments
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key lighting application standards (BS EN 12464-1 and BS EN 12464-2) and building regulations (Part B and Part L) to ensure compliance in lighting projects
  • Identify different stages of fit-outs and evaluate lifetime and maintenance factors that impact lighting performance and sustainability
  • Recognise the roles and responsibilities of lighting designers and other stakeholders in delivering effective and compliant lighting solutions.
