Emergency Lighting - Understanding Legislation, Design, Risk Assessment and the Importance of Competence


This course will give delegates a real look at the basis and need for emergency lighting, explained with live risk assessment and design exercises that allow them to question and learn using real-life examples.

Lighting designers, installers, consultants, manufacturers Sales people and those new to risk assessment and emergency lighting in commercial buildings


In a classroom environment using PowerPoint slides, worked examples in worskhops, live risk assessments with group feedback and simple design workshops. Delivery is by experience emergency lighting design and standards specialists with over 30 years’ experience of live projects.


Legislation – to learn the basis for emergency lighting, the legal framework, and the supporting standards

Risk – understanding the risk assessment basis for emergency lighting, the roles of key players, where to start. Students will carry our example risk assessments focused on the lighting needs for exit route lighting, signage and specific risks.

Design – explaining the design framework, key lighting and signage requirements, applying design knowledge, testing your design meets good practice and providing evidence of design performance

Luminaires – understanding the testing of luminaire performance and the compliance routes ot prove luminaires conform to best practice safety and design legislation.

Competence– Understanding the roles of competent persons, designers and installers. The needs for certification/sign off. Establishing a frameworks and route to your own competence. Understanding competence is a life long journey.


2 days face to face live sessions, 9:30am-4:30pm. Maximum 12 people per group.


Live group session with feedback. Comparison of student answers with the group and model answers within workshop sessions.


HNC or HND in Lighting, Lighting Certificate, Advanced Lighting Certificate.
