For a number of years, the Lighting Industry Academy has been running a classroom-based course aimed at providing delegates with an understanding of DIALux 4 Software.
Following the release of DIALux evo there were many versions during the development of this completely new software, and because it’s totally new software, there was slow uptake of it amongst DIALux users. But the latest release integrates design tools key to the success of lighting designers in coming years (integration with Building Information Modelling for one).
A variant of the Foundation course covering the basics of lighting design is also offered. The variant is taught with the Foundation course, with the tutor relating software use back to real-life examples.
About DIALux evo
DIALux evo is a much faster tool than DIALux 4 with better rendering, better handling of a complex model and has a different concept of construction, applying material, light and making the calculation.
With DIALux evo software you can design, calculate and visualize light professionally for single rooms, whole floors, buildings and outdoor scenes.
Features of DIALux evo and difference with DIALux 4:
|DIALux evo 8.1||DIALux 4|
|Single room planning||√||√|
|Interaction between indoor and outdoor scene||√|
|IFC import (BIM)||√|
DIALux software is available as a desktop version and as a basic mobile app which can be downloaded at the following link - https://www.dial.de/en/dialux/

WHO IT IS FOR
The companies who will benefit from this course are:
> Lighting design houses
> Luminaire Manufacturers
> Luminaire Importers
> Luminaire Distributors
The delegates in the following roles will find the course useful for them:
> Lighting designers
> Technical personnel
> Sales Personnel
> Product designers
> Lighting Engineers
> Electrical designers
The Foundation level course along with the Intermediate and Advanced levels will be offered as part of the HNC/D in Lighting Design and Technology, with students working at academic level 4 and 5.
Pre-requisites of attendance
Attendees should understand the fundamentals of lighting design, or it is suggested that they attend the day-long Introduction to Lighting course, and preferably, the Lighting Fundamentals course offered over two days.
Attendees must be computer literate and have the latest version of DIALux evo installed on a compatible Windows-based laptop.
HOW IT IS DELIVERED
The course is delivered through a certified trainer of DIALux software who is experienced in the use of DIALux evo and conversant with its application and lighting design.
Currently, the tutor delivering the course is Iain Macrae - the DIAL UK training partner for DIALux evo. Iain already delivers the Certificate and Advanced Certificate course for the LIA.
The course is designed to be delivered at any location with the only requisites of a screen/projector and suitable power for a course which requires laptops for each trainee.
All attendees will need to bring their own laptop with the latest DIALux evo software installed.
MODULES/ LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The DIALux Evo foundation course is designed to take delegates through the basic use of DIALux Evo.
The delegates will learn setting up simple projects to obtain simple lighting design outcomes, including:
- > Working on CAD drawings
- > Evaluating inline with EN 12464
- > Using regularly spaced arrays of luminaires
- > Printing drawings and reports as outputs
Delegates will experience the software live working along with the tutor using worked examples. The tutor will answer questions and solve software related problems during the workshop.
Learning outcomes are:
- > The ability to access DIALux evo, understand its layout and perform lighting calculations
- > The ability to import CAD and IFC format files and work with them to provide lighting designs
- > Gain an understanding of the settings within the software,
- > Understand how to produce meaningful outputs in both electronic and paper format.
- > An understanding of the practicalities of lighting measures within lighting software.
- > An overview of lighting terminology, and basic methods of lighting calculation.
As the software is being updated on a regular basis with new features being added, it is not intended for the course to have course notes or handouts for delegates to take home. The attendees will be given relevant examples, in DIALux evo format, to work on throughout the course which they may keep.
One day: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm.
The learners are not assessed on this course.
Students may want to consider other courses in Lighting Design Software for training on DIALux offered at the Foundation and Intermediate levels and Relux at the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
In addition, learners may also want to improve their knowledge of a specific topic of lighting by enrolling on to the courses in one of the following subject areas:
- > Energy Efficient Lighting (understanding LEDs and their energy saving benefits)
- > Standards and Legislation
- > Emergency Lighting (endorsed by ICEL)
Depending upon the learner's experience and knowledge, they may choose to do the courses from the Introductory, Certificate, Advanced Certificate and all the way up to the Higher National Certificate and Diploma (HNC and HND) in Lighting Design and Technology (in partnership with the University of South Wales).
For individual delegates:
|Member||£325 + VAT|
|Non-Member||£375 + VAT|
For a group of up to 10 delegates from a company delivered as a closed course:
Closed company courses are a more effective way to train your staff together for a more cost-effective and flexible solution for your business.
The course contents for a closed course can be tailored to relate directly to the specifics of an organisation’s requirements following a conversation with the trainer.
