HNC/HND in Lighting Design and Technology

 

Offered in partnership between the Lighting Industry Association and the University of South Wales.

The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) in partnership with the University of South Wales (USW) now offers two higher education qualifications in lighting design and technology through the Lighting Industry Academy.

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Lighting Design and Technology are the first qualifications in lighting at this level in the UK available for new entrants and those looking to further develop existing careers within the lighting industry.

The courses are delivered jointly through the Lighting Industry Academy and USW and will appeal to those looking to develop their understanding of light, lighting technologies, design, and their applications. This could be new entrants to the industry from other disciplines looking to understand the lighting technologies and their applications in great detail or existing workers in the sector.

The collaboration between the leading industry association an established university offers students the best teaching and learning from industry experts with ‘Recognised Teacher Status’ from USW.

 Following the successful completion of the HNC, students then have the option to continue either on a full or part-time basis to complete the HND

WHO IT IS FOR

New entrants to the industry from other disciplines looking to understand the lighting technologies, design and their applications in great detail, or those working right across the lighting community.

Designed to meet the need of both employer and employee, for whom developing lighting design and technology skills and are key to the future.

HOW IT IS DELIVERED

Each module is achieved through a combination of all or some of, lectures, tutorials, group work, practical workshops, directed study, project work, and independent study.

The modules are delivered in blocks and scheduled to enable students to manage time, even when in full-time employment.

Most lectures and tutorials are at the Academy in Telford* offering the students access to the LIA Laboratory for some of the practical work.

Learning environment includes access to the state-of-the-art facilities at the LIA and USW

*The Electrical Principles and Design module is delivered at the Treforest, Pontypridd Campus of USW

ATTENDANCE

HNC in Lighting Design and Technology - 1 year full-time | 2 years part-time

HND in Lighting Design and Technology - 2 years full-time | 4 years part-time

The first session starts on 16th September (subject to confirmation).

ASSESSMENT

Formal assessment of learning will be made through a combination of written assignments, presentations and testing. No formal exams are included.

For full-time delivery, the students will complete all 120 credits of the HNC within the first year, and the remaining 120 credits of HND in the second year.

For part-time delivery, the students will complete 60 credits per year, completing the required credit for the HNC over the first two years of study and then the remaining credit requirements of the HND in years 3 and 4.

PROGRESSION

Upon successful completion of the HND course, the students will have the opportunity to progress to BSc (Hons) Lighting Design and Technology degree through USW.

FEES

Fee rates for Welsh Universities are regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW).

Fees for the 2020-21 intake:

A deposit of £500 will secure your place on the course. This will be refunded against tuition fees.

Due to the nature of how the course is operated and the costs incurred to set up student registration, ALL deposits are non-refundable.
