Zumtobel Group creates a well lit stage for Trespass merchandise
When leading outdoor clothing retailer Trespass were looking for a lighting partner to help develop the lighting in their new stores, Zumtobel Group, with its lighting brands Thorn and Zumtobel Lighting, provided the perfect solution for the project. The brief was to give the shop floor a theatre like feel and to create a stage for the merchandise, whilst improving the brightness to welcome shoppers into the store.
Trespass is a privately owned international sportswear brand, specialising in skiwear, waterproof jackets, fleeces, festival accessories, walking boots and camping gear. Established in 1938, the business was originally involved in the design and manufacture of workwear and other protective outerwear for local businesses and public services. Following expansion of its retail operations in the UK and Europe, the firm said investment it had undertaken is "now bearing fruit".
In order to achieve the required 750 lux on the shop floor, 1000 lux on the perimeter shop floor and 1500 lux on the window displays, the lighting design team at Zumtobel had to mix, beam angles and colour temperatures. Glare and the correct mounting height were also issues that had to be overcome. TECTON C in triangles were chosen to illuminate the main shop floor and TECTON C in black with ONICO spotlights around the perimeter of the shop floor.
Several designs were originally created but the final decision was to use TECTON C in black with ONICO spotlights to achieve the desired results with the benefit of fast, simple installation and low energy consumption thus reducing costs. TECTON is the world’s first continuous-row lighting solution to have an 11-pole current conducting section built into its trunking, which means that the system comes ready equipped to meet tomorrow’s needs. All functions such as power supply, lighting control and connection to emergency lighting are seamlessly integrated into this multifunctional trunking. Luminaires can be positioned flexibly and the system can be adapted to suit structural alterations at any time.
ONICO spotlights with a high lumen package and narrow beam optics ensure that the lighting is punched directly onto the displays and cash desk. ONICO is a modular downlight system that features a distinctive design with a sleek, minimalistic aesthetic. The ONICO operating unit is integrated directly into the spotlight, resulting in a powerful performance that maintains an unobtrusive look. ONICO transfers heat energy to the casing surface, thus guaranteeing maximum luminous efficacy and durability and passive cooling ensures performance power and durability.
Thorn’s CHALICE recessed LED downlights and POPPACK battens with integrated LED technology have been used to light the back of house area. CHALICE offer the advantages of a high efficacy of 106lm/W for low energy consumption and a height of less than 100mm, making it ideal for low ceiling void depth. PopPack utilises the very latest LED technology to provide an affordable, energy saving luminaire that offers an increase in efficiency (>110Llm/W) that exceeds the current building regulations and up to 67% reduction in energy consumption, when compared to the traditional fluorescent alternatives and lumen packages from 3000 to 6500lm. Maintenance expense and time is reduced as the light engine is manufactured to run for 50,000 hours at L70 (equivalent to 10 years at 16 hours per day, six days per week operation) which substantially decreases the cost and time spent on lamp replacement and general maintenance.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the UK's decision to leave the EU and the weakening of sterling, the directors are satisfied that with continued investment the group can look forward to a healthy future with increased profitability.
