The Lighting Industry Academy’s LIA Certificate is recognised throughout the industry as the main lighting course to enhance your lighting knowledge. Designed to be a stepping stone in your career that can lead you to many different opportunities within the lighting industry.
The Certificate has gone through many changes over numerous years. New legislation, the introduction of LED Lighting and a greater understanding of how lighting affects people has meant that the course is constantly evolving.
The course required students to complete three Test Papers and comprehensive Lighting Project. They were assigned a project brief to either provide a lighting scheme for the new offices for an internationally famous architectural practice that just happened to have an internationally famous lighting design department as well. Or provide an upgrade for an existing woodworking company.
Both of these projects demanded creative thinking and utilised all the lighting knowledge delivered during the course.
During 2017, over two hundred and fifty students completed the LIA Certificate Course. The top five students were selected and invited for an interview at the Lighting Industry Academy, where they were asked to discuss their project and other course content. The 2017 finalists were:
- Sarah Burke from Tyson Lighting
- Jess Costanza from Simmtronics
- Ben Farrell from Apollo Lighting
- Charlotte Millerchip from Into
- Rebecca Walton from Steon
The finalists presented their work on the 25th April, to the judging panel consisting of LIA Certificate Tutors Bob Bohannon, Iain McCrae, Paul Stearman and Peter Adams representing Awards Sponsor, Mackwell. The quality of the projects and proposals were exceptionally high.

Embodying the philosophy of the Academy, the LIA Certificate naturally aligns itself with Sponsor, Mackwell, respected not only as one of the leading providers of technology solutions for the global lighting industry. Mackwell also practice the core principles of the importance of knowledge and training.
The finalists were invited to the LIA's Annual Luncheon on 10th May to hear the Mackwell Outstanding Student of the Year announced by LIA CEO Steve Davies.
The accolades went to Sarah Burke from Tyson Lighting, who was presented with the crystal LIA Certificate Award Bowl, along with a certificate and cheque for £500.
“Sarah showed remarkable talent for someone who has only worked in the lighting industry for just over two years and we are convinced will have great success in the years to come”. Paul Stearman MSLL, LIA Tutor
“My position as a Lighting Designer at Tyson Lighting allows me to explore the role that light plays in the human experience. The knowledge I gained by completing the LIA Certificate Course has been invaluable in enabling me to practice inline with my sense of moral obligation as a designer today, to create solutions with environmental consciousness, centred on the user experience and emotional durability.” Sarah Burke
The runners up were Charlotte Millership from Into and Rebecca Walton from Steon. They also received a crystal bowl, certificate and cheque for £250.
All the finalists should be commended on their professionalism, the time and energy put into their projects and their exceptional presentations.
The LIA and Lighting Industry Academy would like to thank the judging panel for their time and enthusiasm and of course Mackwell, not just for their continued support of these awards but also for their commitment to the Lighting Industry Academy as Academy Ambassadors.
