Coronavirus update

The LIA wishes to support its members in any way we can and this page is a resource aimed at providing regular Government updates, advice, FAQs, news and other information to help see us all through this crisis. Advice from Government is updated daily and is being sent directly to members as we receive it.

This is your association and we invite you to make suggestions as to what we should be including here. We would welcome content whether it be news, uplifting stories or videos, how your company is helping in the fight against the virus, for example are you supplying lighting to the Nightingale hospitals? We will run surveys from time to time and publish the results here.

If you are trying to access Government backed funding or other emergency measures to support your business and having trouble doing so, please contact Peter Hunt at  peterh@thelia.org.uk . Peter is in regular direct contact with the relevant Government departments that are keen to hear how the measures are working and where there are problems.

12-05-20 - Personal Protection Equipment -Covid-19 - Advice for LIA members

As many businesses re-open their operations, attention has turned towards an employer’s responsibility in ensuring their workplace is safe for their employees, clients and visitors. It is assumed that LIA members are well versed in the PPE requirements for specific manufacturing tasks that take place in their day to day business, but this communication refers to procurement of additional measures taken to avoid the transmission of the COVID 19 virus.

The advice given here is supplied in good faith by the British Safety Industry Federation, however, neither the BSIF or the LIA can be held responsible for the effectiveness of the measures or their application.

The UK Government issued advice on returning to work on May 11th which included advice on PPE. The Government advice can be found here:

Additional advice from the BSIF is as follows:

Face Masks - To avoid contact with the virus, face masks should be level FFP3 and FFP2 would be a minimum requirement. (Both of these are within the scope of EN149).

Gloves - Should be disposable, usually nitrile to EN455 or EN374.

Face and eye protection - Should be compliant to EN166.

How to check the PPE you are buying is compliant
We are aware that there is a great deal of PPE appearing on the market which is not compliant with the required standards and regulations and many have certification by laboratories which are not qualified or even have fake certificates.

All of the PPE mentioned above requires the involvement of a notified body scoped for PPE legislation 2016/425 and they must appear on the list provided here.

Further guidance on how to check for compliance is given in the BSIF checklist on documentation which can be found here
