Alasdair McRury the LIA Salutes You

After an illustrious career spanning over 30 years, the lighting industry are saying goodbye to Alasdair McRury as Managing Director of Holophane Europe, he will be remaining as a Non-Executive Chairman for Holophane Europe. So, in light of this, The LIA would like to say a personal thank you to the man that guided the Association through its most successful and progressive period.

Alasdair was elected LIA President in 2013, supporting the new CEO, Steve Davies and the vision to build an Association equipped to support the Members, lighting industry and supporting industries requirements for the future and its technological advancements. This culminated in the establishment of a new LIA Laboratory and the Lighting Industry Academy.

March 2016 saw Alasdair open the LIA Laboratory to the industry. Based in Telford, at 12,500 sq. ft, this purpose-built facility is still the largest of its type in Europe and houses the latest ‘state-of-the-art’ testing equipment.

The LIA Laboratory was many years’ in the planning with lighting manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and wholesalers and provides the industry with a cutting-edge testing and certification service helping grow exports and improve product compliance.

Only 6 months later the Academy came online in September 2016, which was developed to create a hub for high-quality learning for the lighting community. Through continued investment, the Academy is assisting individuals and companies gain knowledge and develop the up-to-date skills required for lighting today.

When Alasdair was elected LIA President, back in 2013, he commented that:
“It is important at this time of the digital revolution in lighting that the LIA works with its partners and government to ensure that the quality standards and compliance are pursued vigorously to ensure a level playing field for all companies working in the UK lighting industry”.

This led to him and the LIA Council initiating the drive towards market compliance, which subsequent Presidents and Councils have built on and developed into the industry renowned LIA Compliance scheme.

As President, Alasdair gave up his time and imparted his knowledge and experience not just to the LIA Council but also the internal LIA team and as residing President Terry Dean said:

“I have known Alasdair for nearly 20 years, as an industry colleague and in his roles as a Council Member and President.  During this time, I have observed he has always demonstrated a very professional approach in dealing with his LIA Council colleagues.  With great market awareness and knowledge, his contribution to the LIA over the years can only be described as “significant”. Terry Dean – LIA President

The LIA are indebted to Alasdair for his commitment and friendship and we congratulate him on his tremendous career in the lighting industry. We would also like to thank Holophane for supporting Alasdair during his time as LIA President.
