Dr Gareth John

Since graduating from Southampton University with a PHD in Quantum and Functional Matter Physics. Gareth has spent the past ten years specialising in photometric/optical testing services for a variety of industries, with lighting becoming his forte.
Already highly respected within the realms of academia, photometry and lighting, Gareth is also experienced in establishing and managing various laboratories and centres of excellence, including Photometric and Optical Testing Services LLP and Birmingham Science Park Aston.
With an encyclopaedic knowledge and varied experiences, Gareth brings a unique perspective to the Association. He has been instrumental in the re-development of Lighting Industry Academy Courses and is looking forward to taking a lead role in the delivery and management of the HND to ensure the industry’s needs are meet.

Paul recently graduated from Wolverhampton University with a first class honours degree in Electronics and Communications, where he also received the most outstanding student award. He has 20 years’ experience of working in technology as an engineer and systems analyst.
Paul has played a key role in the re-development of materials for the LIAs portfolio of training courses and is current writing new modules to support the LIA’s quality assurance scheme. He is an ITOL certificated trainer and an IRCA certified lead auditor.

Andy is an experienced electrical / electronic engineer and has worked with the LIA since 2003. With a technical engineering background and extensive experience in supply chains from manufacturing through to end use, Andy is well placed to understand the challenges faced by all areas of the lighting industry, especially with the introduction of LED technology.
Engagement with manufacturers, support organisations and individuals in the lighting industry is a key aspect of Andy’s role. Through his work with LIA quality system audits and support, alongside his role as part of the LIA training team, he has a strong focus on ensuring members of the lighting fraternity are conversant with latest legislative requirements and best practice
Through working closely with both the laboratory and other members of the LIA technical team, Andy has an excellent knowledge of standards, legislation and compliance which is key to supporting LIA members and students of the LIA Academy in achieving success in the modern market place.

Iain Macrae graduated in Mechanical Engineering and somehow found his way into lighting. Since starting with Thorn 30 years ago he has gained many years' manufacturing, application and technical experience including a whole range of projects across most market sectors.
Iain is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow and Past President of the Society of Light & Lighting and authors for British and European lighting standards, lighting guides, codes. He uses his depth of understanding to author and deliver lighting and software training.
In 2017, Iain set up his own consultancy on lighting strategy, product appraisal and application, lighting design, standards advice, technical marketing and training. On top of all that he has a reputation as an engaging conference moderator and thought provoking speaker.

Richard has 40 years’ experience lighting design and testing, and has supported the creation of multiple industry guidance documents. In his capacity as founder and Director of 42 Partners, he has provided services and extensive support to more than 30 lighting companies in the UK and internationally.
42 Partners provide independent technical service for lighting manufacturers and users. Established in 1992 as an independent photometric laboratory, services have been expanded to include lighting, design and test consultancy, CAD modelling and virtual testing and lens, louvre reflector, refractor and prism design, amongst others. 42 Partners are the sole UK and Ireland authorised provider of Relux light simulation training.

Paul has worked in the lighting industry for most of his life. A qualified Lighting Designer and Lighting Consultant specialising in Low Energy and LED Lighting, he has worked with major clients such as Whitbread, Mitchell & Butlers, JCB and a number of large schools and colleges. Paul is passionate about lighting and helping clients reduce their energy bills though the correct choice of LED Lighting and Lighting Controls.
Paul is a member is the Society of Light and Lighting (MSLL) and has worked in Senior Management for some of the UK’s largest lighting companies. He is also a tutor for the Lighting Industry Association where he runs courses on Energy Saving with LED Lighting and Understanding the use of LED Lighting.

Liz has a wealth of experience in lighting design, having been in the industry for 15 years. She started her lighting career with Concord Lighting in early 1999 and joined the lighting design department of Concord:marlin two years later.
In 2003, she joined Philips Lighting as Senior Lighting Designer and worked there for just under five years, working on a number of their flagship projects.
Liz gained a Masters Degree in Light & Lighting from the Bartlett School of Architecture in 2004. She is a Fellow & President of the Society of Light & Lighting.

Bob started his career in lighting in the late 1980s with an LIA course. Since then, after gaining an MSc in Architecture Light and Lighting from UCL, he’s gained thirty years’ experience designing and delivering lighting schemes ranging from a local Church up to the scale of London's Royal Albert Hall. Bob has worked both in independent lighting design practices and up to CEO level at a German manufacturer, thus he combines lighting, consultancy, technical, product development, project management and corporate skills. These skills, together with the teams around him helped deliver many major projects including: Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower; Atlantis the Palm Hotel in Dubai; Heathrow’s Terminals 2,4 & 5; and major stations including London Paddington, St Pancras and the new western concourse at London's Kings Cross
A strong believer in both Environmental and Corporate Social responsibility, he is committed to reducing the environmental impact of his activities for the sake of generations to follow. He is a leading member of the UK lighting community and his work through the Society of Light & Lighting (he became a Vice President in 2016) and increasingly the Academy Team at the Lighting Industry Association allows him to further his mission to deliver good lighting to the widest possible user base.
