The LIA’s 2014 ‘Delight in Light’ competition has been won by Peter Iveson, a recent graduate of Dundee University with a strong passion for practical design.

Peter’s design ‘Study Bright‘ (pictured above), offered an alternative, low running cost solution powered by three very bright LEDs that allows students to study in total darkness for the cost of one tea candle each evening. If the user needs to move away from their work space then the light can be simply folded into a torch and carried around for short periods of time.

‘Delight in Light’ is the LIA’s national student lighting designer competition which aims to promote the very best in lighting design and sponsored by Angelpoise.

This years’ competition saw 64 entries whittled down to eight finalists, all of whom were invited to exhibit at 100% Design at Earls Court, London.

Visitors to the show were asked to vote for their favorite design with over 2,000 votes taken and four entries were chosen to be in the public final, these were:

The judging panel of ‘Delight in Light’ 2014 consisted of Peter Hunt (the LIA), Alex Taylor (Alexander Taylor Studio) and Simon Terry (Angelpoise). (Shown above with the 2014 finalists)

Peter Hunt commented “Speaking on behalf of the judging panel, we were extremely impressed with the excellent presentations from all entrants and the result was very close in the end. The judging panel and all those involved in the competition would like to thank the four finalists for their hard work and excellent standard of submission”.

‘Delight in Light’ strives to promote the very best in new lighting design each year and allows a fair judgment by offering a public voting process.

The changes we have made to the Delight in Light Design competition also reflects the way we communicate.

To summarise them:

  • Entries will be uploaded to the website.
  • Entries can be viewed online and the public can vote to create a shortlist.
  • Judging of the finalists will take place at 100% design with high profile judges from the design world and the lighting industry.
  • Delight in Light is on Facebook  and Twitter and we encourage use of these resources by the designers and industry to generate a forum and liaison.
  • Deadlines are much later than previous years allowing a more flexible approach for individual and block entries. Deadline is midnight on the 1 August 2014
